The Food Bank
Jubilee Church is excited to be part of The Food Bank in Worthing. A ground-breaking initiative designed to help individuals and families in crisis by providing free emergency food until such time as the appropriate agencies are in a position to assist. This project, pioneered by the Trussell Trust, is also operating in other towns and cities in the UK, helping thousands of people in need.
What is The Food Bank? The Food Bank is a straightforward system of collection, collation and distribution of basic food items to support people at times of crisis. The Food Bank collects a variety of tinned and dried foods through supermarkets, organizations, churches and individuals.
Through a system of Food Vouchers, people who are in need can get an emergency food supply. The voucher holders are front line care professionals such as health visitors and care agencies. A voucher can be exchanged at the Food Bank Distribution Centre, at the Salvation Army Centre in Worthing, for a bag of nutritionally balanced tinned and dried food to last 3 days for a single person or a family.
Who is it for? The Food Bank is there for anyone in short term crisis due to unexpected unemployment, benefit delay, debt, sickness, etc... It also offers support services – providing advocacy, counselling, and a helping hand. Emergency Food Boxes can be held by care agencies to use in an emergency and bulk withdrawals are available for groups working with the homeless and the needy.
Who can help? Anyone who would like to make a difference in the lives of others can drop goods off at special Supermarket collections, at our Warehouse, or via satellite collection points. A great way to contribute to the work of The Food Bank is to become a volunteer. Below are two volunteering opportunities and a link to sign up.
Food Bank Centre Helping in the centre involves packing food bags for clients who come in with a voucher, or if you feel you want to be the one listening and talking to a client, you can have a bit of training for it and do that. You can volunteer for one or more afternoon slots a week. The centre runs from 2 p.m. Till 3.30 p.m. Each team has 3 members with one being in a supervisory role. Good fun! Supermarket Collections These are run either once in 2 months or monthly depending on stocks at a supermarket. Helping here involves either sorting incoming food into boxes or handing out shopping lists to customers with a quick speel why we are doing it. Julie would train you to do that. You volunteer for one 2-hour slot on a Saturday between 10 am and 4 p.m. Contact Julie Denyer on 01903 821921 or...
